Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
is a powerful and highly effective in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as trauma, psychological conditions and different types of psychological distress.
Trauma could be anything that negatively impacts the you and deters from health development, the event that is experienced as traumatic by the individual remains and continues to affect the individual’s functioning. When a traumatic event occurs, the individual continues through life with symptoms that impact daily life.
EMDR Therapy is based on the idea that negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours are the result of unprocessed memories.
These memories could be the result of stressful or traumatic life events. EMDR Therapy is a structured treatment that involves focusing simultaneously on a) an upsetting issue or traumatic memory and its associated thoughts, feelings and sensations, and b) bilateral stimulation that is most commonly in the form of repeated eye movements. Once traumatic and negative memories have been desensitized and reprocessed, they no longer have the same negative impact. Memories typically become less vivid and upsetting, intrusive symptoms such as distressing thoughts or memories, flashbacks or nightmares reduce or cease, and more adaptive beliefs emerge
