Now Accepting Referrals
An ADHD diagnosis in adulthood often brings significant emotional and psychological needs that medication alone won’t address. For many adults, the diagnosis arrives after years of being told they were lazy, difficult, not trying hard enough, or simply not measuring up. The relief of finally having an explanation can be quickly followed by grief, and the slow work of reassessing a lifetime of experiences through a new lens.
Therapy is a valuable part of the post-diagnosis picture. Referring early makes a difference.
What to look for in your patients
Adults presenting after an ADHD diagnosis commonly experience:
- Rejection sensitivity, often disproportionate and difficult to regulate
- Persistent feelings of inadequacy, not being good enough, or never measuring up
- Deeper beliefs of being too much, too complicated, or too difficult for others
- Low mood and depression, frequently linked to a long history of underperformance
- Anxiety, including social anxiety, stemming from years of unpredictability and social difficulty
- Emotional dysregulation, including rapid mood shifts and difficulty returning to baseline
- Chronic fatigue from masking and the sustained effort of managing daily functioning
Adults with ADHD are also at significantly higher risk of:
- Substance use disorders, frequently developed as a coping mechanism before diagnosis
- Binge eating and disordered eating, linked to impulsivity and emotional dysregulation
- Burnout, particularly in high-achieving adults who have overcompensated for years
- Sleep disorders, which exacerbate almost every other presentation on this list
- Relationship breakdown, driven by communication patterns, emotional reactivity and rejection sensitivity
What therapy involves
Therapy for adults with ADHD post-diagnosis focuses on schema-based work to address longstanding beliefs about the self, self-compassion to support the grieving process, practical skills for emotional regulation, psychoeducation for the patient and their support people, and targeted work on comorbid anxiety and depression where present.
