Now Accepting Referrals
Family therapy is one of the most underutilised referral pathways available to GPs and allied health professionals. It’s often assumed to be appropriate only for families in crisis. In practice, it’s most effective earlier, when patterns are more flexible and there’s still enough connection in the family to work with.
When to consider a family therapy referral
Family therapy is particularly beneficial for children and teenagers. It’s worth considering when:
- A child or young person is experiencing self-harm or has recently disclosed self-harm behaviour
- A young person has received a new diagnosis, including ADHD, autism, anxiety or depression, and the family needs support to understand and respond to it
- A young person is presenting with anxiety, depression or behavioural difficulties that appear linked to family dynamics
- There is a communication breakdown between parents and an adolescent
- A family is adjusting to a significant transition including divorce or separation, blended family formation, or bereavement
- Conflict within the family is affecting the functioning of multiple members
- A parent wants practical guidance on how to respond to their child’s mental health needs
- Individual therapy for a young person has plateaued and the relational context needs attention
- A young person is reluctant to engage in individual therapy but may respond in a family context
What family therapy involves at The Therapy Hub
Marie Vakakis and Tham Fuyana are both qualified family therapists at The Therapy Hub. They work with families using a systemic approach that considers how each member’s experience affects and is affected by the others. Sessions may involve the whole family, a subset of family members, or parents alone depending on the presenting issue and the goals of treatment.
Family therapy at The Therapy Hub is structured and goal-focused. It’s not about assigning blame. It’s about understanding the patterns that are keeping the family stuck and building the skills to move differently.

We are currently accepting family therapy referrals with availability for new clients.
